This talk will start by analysing the need for energy storage for decarbonization, and then review the global status of electrochemical energy storage, followed with the discussion of future perspectives for electrochemical energy storage in research and development.

About the speaker

Professor Guohua Chen

Professor Guohua Chen graduated with BEng from Dalian University of Technology in 1984. He obtained his MEng and PhD degrees from McGill University in 1989 and 1994 respectively with National Scholarship, and Scholarship from PAPRICan. He started his academic career from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1994, and promoted to Full Professor in 2008. He served as Head of Department from 2012 to 2016. He worked also at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (2017-2022) and City University of Hong Kong (2022-2025). He now returns to HKUST to continue his academic career there. He serves as Editor-in-Chief, Process Safety and Environmental Protection, Editor of Separation and Purification Technology, Associate Editor, Energy Materials and Device, Energy Z. He was the President of the 22nd International Meeting of Lithium Meeting, Vice President of Council, IMLB. He is also the Chairman, World CHemcial Engineering Council. He is a Fellow of AIChE, HKIE. He is a Fellow, Canadian Academy of Engineering, Hong Kong Academy of Engineering.

About the project

Multifunctional Filters for Protecting Public Health

Clean water and clean air are vital for public health. This project focuses on developing high-efficiency and environmentally sustainable filters for removing harmful air/water pollutants. The team has developed novel architectures and functionalities for the filters to achieve high permeance, high removal efficiency, and excellent reusability.
