The rapid development of generative AI has ignited a new wave of technological innovations. Breakthroughs like ChatGPT and DeepSeek are opening doors to democratize and accelerate adoption across various industries and countries. This new era presents both challenges and opportunities for institutions of higher education, such as Lingnan University, where research and creativity are integral to daily life. The university acknowledges that knowledge is dynamic and evolving, not static, and disruptive technologies can displace existing professions while creating new ones.
Several open questions to be addressed include:
• Breakthroughs from ChatGPT to DeepSeek
• How will generative AI affect the curriculum?
• What education subjects would be sustained or diminished?
• How can we help students enhance critical thinking skills with generative AI?
• How does the digital revolution affect higher education in terms of skills-based and holistic education?

  • The tech talk “Breakthroughs from ChatGPT to DeepSeek and Higher Education Revolution” will be organized in the Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two (G/F, Run Run Shaw Building, HKU) on 18th February 2025 (Tuesday), 4:00pm.
  • Seats are limited. Zoom broadcast is available if the seating quota is full. 
  • Registrants on the waiting list will be notified of the arrangement after the registration deadline (with seating/free-standing/other arrangement)

Professor S. Joe QIN

Professor S. Joe Qin is currently Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science and President of Lingnan University in Hong Kong. He possesses a diverse range of expertise in areas of data science and analytics, machine learning, process monitoring, model predictive control, system identification, smart manufacturing, smart cities, and predictive health monitoring and maintenance. His research work and projects encompass the fields of automation, industrial AI, smart cities, and industrial applications, making significant contributions to the sustainable society.

About the project

Multifunctional Filters for Protecting Public Health

Clean water and clean air are vital for public health. This project focuses on developing high-efficiency and environmentally sustainable filters for removing harmful air/water pollutants. The team has developed novel architectures and functionalities for the filters to achieve high permeance, high removal efficiency, and excellent reusability.
