HKU Design, Build & Fly (DBF) Team is formed by undergraduate students of the University of Hong Kong. The team joins the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Design/Build/Fly Competition each year. In previous years, the team has also attended in British Model Flying Association (BMFA) University and Schools Payload Challenge and received champion and 1st runner-up awards in 2023 – 2024. In 2019, the best result of the Hong Kong teams was established by the HKU DBF Team, ranking 13th among the 104 eligible teams participating in the AIAA competition. It was the first rank among teams from East Asia. Supervised by the Faculty Supervisor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the DBF team is supported by the Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing under the Faculty of Engineering. In future, the team will integrate more innovative projects and explore chances to attend competitions worldwide.
Supervised by Dr. C.K. Chan from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, HKU Design, Build & Fly (DBF) Team is formed by over 25 students majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Due to the regulations of the AIAA and BMFA, an expert in flying and constructing a RC model aircraft is also necessary in the team. The role of pilot and advisor will be taken by him. With the lead by the team captain, the team separates into sub teams responsible for different main parameters of an aircraft, such as fuselage, wing, empennage, and internal mechanisms.
In June 2024, “Design, Build and Fly” teams from the Department of Mechanical Engineering dominated the Payload Challenge 5 of the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) 2024 University and Schools Flight Challenges. The team obtained the 1st runner-up award.
In June 2022, “Design, Build and Fly” teams from the Department of Mechanical Engineering dominated the Payload Challenge 5 of the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) 2022 University and Schools Flight Challenges. We were successful in taking home both the champion and 1st runner-up awards.
